Bedlam Screening

On October 19th of 2024, we hosted a free screening of Bedlam, a documentary directed by Kenneth Paul Rosenberg that exposes the systemic harms in mental healthcare perpetuated by white supremacy, colonization, ableism, and other forms of oppression. Through personal narratives and historical analysis, the film shed light on the failures of the mental health system and sparked critical conversations about abolition, deinstitutionalization, and the need for care models rooted in anti-racism and transformative justice.

Following the screening, we facilitated a community discussion focused on reimagining mental healthcare that is truly equitable and affirming for marginalized communities. Attendees shared experiences and explored ways to build systems of care that uplift and support Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Queer individuals.

The event was held at P.O. Box Collective in Chicago, a wheelchair-accessible space where captions were provided for the film. In alignment with our commitment to collective care, masks were required throughout the event. Given the film’s sensitive content—including discussions of psychiatric hospitalization, systemic abuses, homelessness, and police brutality—we encouraged attendees to engage with the material at their own pace.

This event was an opportunity to build community, reflect on the intersections of mental health and systemic oppression, and imagine new possibilities for care beyond punitive and institutional models.

Volunteer Event

On March 10th of 2024 we hosted a volunteer event designed to build community and introduce interested individuals to Therapy Access Project’s volunteering process. Attendees gained hands-on experience in Access Coordination, learning how to vet and match therapists with Black, Brown, Indigenous, and/or Queer applicants in need of care.

Our Founder and Executive Director, Finn, Communications Director, Olivia, and Development Director, Olyvia were present to answer questions about joining TAP’s social media volunteer team and other volunteer opportunities, such as grant writing.

This event was an opportunity to connect with others, learn about TAP’s mission, and explore ways to support our work in making mental healthcare more accessible and equitable.
